Jessica Diggins
Jesscia Diggins can become the first American female cross-country skier
to achieve back-to-back victories in individual World Cup distance events
since her own wins in Val Müstair and Toblach in 2021.
Diggins can finish on the podium in three consecutive individual World Cup
distance event participations for the third time, following runs in December
2019 (3) and January 2021 (4).
Diggins (3) can become the sixth woman to win at least four individual
World Cup distance events in Sweden, following Marit Bjørgen (14),
Therese Johaug (12), Elena Välbe (8), Larissa Lazutina (4) and Stefania
Belmondo (4).
All of Diggins’ 15 victories in individual World Cup events were achieved in
freestyle events.
Ebba Andersson
Five of Ebba Andersson’s six individual World Cup wins came in 10km
events, including three freestyle events: Val di Fiemme (Tour de Ski) on 10
January 2021, Les Rousses on 27 January 2023 and Toblach on 4
February 2023.
Andersson can become the second Swedish woman to win an individual
World Cup event in Östersund, following Charlotte Kalla’s 10km Freestyle
win on 15 February 2015. Note: excluding the Östersund World Cup sprint
event on 9 December.
Andersson (4) can become the first female cross-country skier to win at
least five individual World Cup distance events in a single calender year
since Therese Johaug achieved a record 12 victories in 2020.
Andersson (4) and Frida Karlsson (4) claimed the most wins in women’s
World Cup distance events last season.
Other contenders
The last six women’s individual World Cup distance events are won by six
different cross-country skiers: Ragnhild Gløersen Hage, Kerttu Niskanen,
Anne Kjersti Kalvå, Ebba Andersson, Moa Ilar and Jessica Diggins.
These events are the first individual World Cup events held in Östersund
since 2019/20, when Therese Johaug won both distance events ahead of
Heidi Weng and Invild Flugstad Østberg.
Moa Ilar (4th – 1st – 3rd) is the only woman to finish in the top-4 in all three
World Cup individual distance events this season.
Frida Karlsson secured a podium finish in one of her last five individual
World Cup distance event participations (3rd place in Ruka on 25
November). This directly follows a streak of six consecutive podium finishes
in individual World Cup distance events.
Karlsson is selected for the Östersund events, but her participation is
uncertain following a COVID infection.
Emma Ribom finished fourth in the 10 km Freestyle event on 2 December,
marking her best result in an individual World Cup distance event. All her
individual World Cup podium finishes came in sprint events.
Last season, Kerttu Niskanen won the distance crystal globe despite
winning only two of the 17 World Cup distance events that season: the
10km classic style in both Beitostølen (10 December 2022) and Falun (17
March 2023).
Niskanen is yet to finish on the podium in an individual World Cup distance
event this season (7th – 32nd – 22nd).
Rosie Brennan hopes to claim her third win in an individual World Cup
event, after two victories in Davos in December 2020 (sprint and 10km
freestyle).
Heidig Weng (9) is in search of her 10th individual World Cup distance
victory. Only Therese Johaug (127), Marit Bjørgen (110) and Elena Välbe
(79) recorded as many individual World Cup distance event podium
finishes as Weng (75).
Victoria Carl is seeking to achieve the first podium finish by a German in a
women’s individual World Cup distance event since Katharina Hennig
claimed third place in Lahti on 26 March 2023.
Anne Kjersti Kalvå won the final individual World Cup distance event of
last season, but is yet to finish in the top seven of a World Cup distance
event this season (26th – 10th – 8th).
