Hans Christer Holund is the reigning world champion in the 15km
freestyle from Oberstdorf. He can become the second cross-country skier
to win multiple 15km events after Veikko Hakulinen (1954, 1958) in classic
style.
Going into these championships Holund has two distance successes from
previous editions (50km freestyle in 2019, 15km freestyle in 2021). In
Planica he can become only the third Norwegian to win at least three
distance events at a world championships; Petter Northug 6, Bjørn Dæhlie
5.
Holund currently sits in second place in the 2022/23 distance World Cup
rankings.
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won a bronze medal in the 15km classic at the
Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. Johan Olsson is the last crosscountry skier to reach the podium in a 15km event in the Olympic Winter
Games (silver, 2014) and the following world championships (gold, 2015).
Pål Golberg is leading the distance World Cup standings this season.
Before the world championships in 2023 he had won his only world title as
a part of the Norwegian men’s relay team that won gold at the world
championships in 2021.
Simen Hegstad Krüger (G0-S2-B1) won three distance medals at the
world championships in 2021, including silver in the 15km freestyle ahead
of Harald Østberg Amundsen in bronze medal position.
Norway can become the first country to do a clean sweep of the medals (GS-B) in a men’s 15km event at the world championships in successive
editions.
Norway can become the first country to win a 15km event in three
successive world championships. Martin Johnsrud Sundby won in 2019.
Iivo Niskanen
Iivo Niskanenwon Finland’s only gold medal in cross-country skiing at the
2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in the 15km classic event. He can
become the first cross-country skier to win the men’s 15km event at the
world championships directly following the Olympic Winter Games.
Niskanen won the world title in the men’s 15km classic style event in 2017.
He could become the second man to win multiple gold medals in 15km
events at the world championships, after Veikko Hakulinen (1954, 1958).
The five multiple winners of the men’s 15km freestyle or classic style event
in the world championships and Olympic Winter Games combined have all
been born in the first three months of the calendar year. Niskanen (2, born
12 January 1992) could join Andrus Veerpalu (3, born in February) and
Dario Cologna (3, born in March) on three wins.
