Norway
Norway has yet to win an individual classic style distance event in
Canmore. It finished on the podium in all three of those events here (2nd in
2005, 2nd in 2012, 3rd in 2016).
Erik Valnes won each of the last two individual World Cup distance events
in the classic style. In the last 10 years, only Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and
Alexander Bolshunov have recorded three wins in a row in classic style
distance events.
Valnes also won the most recent classic style sprint event (in Oberhof on
20 January). He can become the third man this century to record four
consecutive victories in individual events in the classic style (sprint and
distance), after Klæbo (3 times) and Petter Northug (November 2009-
January 2010).
Only Valnes (4) recorded more podium finishes in individual World Cup
classic style distance events this season than Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget
(3). Nyenget won the 10km classic style in Ruka on 25 November, the first
distance event of the season.
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo has won 16 individual distance World Cup
events in the classic style, fourth-most all-time after Bjørn Dæhlie (22),
Vladimir Smirnov (18) and Gunde Svan (18).
Klæbo won all seven of the classic style distance events he participated in
last season. This season, he finished 14th, first and 17th respectively.
Harald Østberg Amundsen comes into Canmore as the leader in the
overall standings and the distance standings. His only individual World Cup
win in classic style was the 20km pursuit in Davos on 4 January.
Pål Golberg has recorded four of his six individual World Cup distance
event wins in the classic style, most recently in Beitostølen on 10
December 2022. Since his last classic style distance win, he finished
outside the top-10 only once when he started, a 20th-place finish in the
10km in Toblach on 31 December 2023 (Tour de Ski).
Other contenders
Perttu Hyvärinen is the only non-Norwegian to claim a World Cup victory
in an individual classic style distance event this season. He won the 10km
classic style in Toblach on 31 December (Tour de Ski).
The two Finnish men to have won individual World Cup events in Canada
are Harri Kirvesniemi (15km classic style in Calgary in January 1987) and
Matti Heikkinen in Canmore in March 2016 (15km freestyle).
William Poromaa’ssecond-place finish in the 15km classic style in Val di
Fiemme on 6 January (Tour de Ski) was his best result in an individual
event in his career.
Sweden has not won a men’s World Cup distance event since Marcus
Hellner’s victory in the 15km pursuit freestyle in Quebec on 19 March 2017
(World Cup Final).
Andrew Musgrave is looking to become the first Briton to win a World Cup
event. He has recorded one podium finish in a classic style individual
distance event, a third place in the 10km in Beitostølen on 10 December
2022.
