Jessie Diggins
Jessie Diggins could claim the distance crystal globe in this event. She has
won the distance standings once before, in 2020/21.
Diggins could join Therese Johaug (5), Justyna Kowalczyk (4), Marit
Bjørgen (3), Heidi Weng (2) and Virpi Kuitunen (2) on multiple distance
crystal globes.
Diggins can become the first woman representing United States to win an
individual World Cup distance event in the classic style. Her best result in
these events is a third place (five times). Diggins comes into Oslo as the
leader in both the overall and distance standings.
Frida Karlsson
Frida Karlsson (2) is one of two women who have won multiple individual
distance events in the classic style this World Cup season, alongside Kerttu
Niskanen (2). Karlsson triumphed in the 20km mass start events in Oberhof
(20 January) and Canmore (11 February).
Therese Johaug (5 in 2019/20) was the last woman to record more than
two individual World Cup victories in the classic style in a single season.
Karlsson is the only non-Norwegian woman that has won a individual
distance event of at least 30km in the World Cup in the last 14 years. She
triumphed in the 30km classic style in Oslo on 7 March 2020.
Among Swedish women, only Charlotte Kalla (9) has won as many
individual World Cup distance events as Karlsson (9).
Karlsson has participated in individual classic style distance events in the
World Cup on Norwegian snow three times, finishing first, first and third.
Karlsson has only recorded as many individual World Cup wins in Germany
(4) as in Norway (3).
Kerttu Niskanen
Kerttu Niskanen (2) is one of two women, alongside Frida Karlsson, to have
won multiple individual classic style distance events this World Cup
season. She triumphed in Toblach (31 December) and Davos (4 January),
both in the Tour de Ski.
Johaug (5 in 2019/20) was the last woman to record more than two
individual World Cup victories in classic style distance events in a single
season.
Among Finnish women, only Virpi Kuitunen (30), Marja-Liisa Kirvesniemi
(11) and Marjo Matikainen (8) have won as many individual World Cup
events as Niskanen (7).
All seven of Niskanen’s individual World Cup wins were in classic style
distance events. Iivo Niskanen, Kerttu’s brother, also claimed all his eight
individual wins in classic style distance events.
Other contenders
This will be the first individual 50km event in the classic style in the
women’s World Cup. Last season, a 50km freestyle event was staged in
Oslo (won by Ragnhild Gløersen Haga).
Only two longer individual events have been staged in the women’s World
Cup: 58km in the classic style in Rena-Lillehammer in March 2002 (won by
Anita Moen) and the 70km in the classic style in Marcialonga in January
2004 (won by Gabriella Paruzzi).
Norwegian women have won 13 of the last 14 individual World Cup
events that were 30km or longer, with Frida Karlsson’s victory in the 30km
classic style in Oslo on 7 March 2020 as the exception. Of the four
Norwegian women that won those 13 events, only Heidi Weng is not
retired as of now.
In this season’s World Cup, Norwegian women are yet to win an individual
distance event. Heidi Weng (two second places) is the only Norwegian
woman to have reached the podium in an individual distance event this
season.
Krista Pärmäkoski won the 20km classic style in Lahti last week, her first
individual win in the World Cup since a win in the 10km classic style in
Falun on 17 March 2018. Pärmäkoski can join Frida Karlsson and her
compatriot Kerttu Niskanen on two classic style distance event wins this
season. Karlsson and Niskanen also recorded their wins in back-to-back
events.
Victoria Carl won the 10km classic style in Trondheim earlier this season
on 17 December. She is one of three German women that have won an
individual classic style distance event in the World Cup, alongside Claudia
Nystad and Katharina Henning.
Carl can join Berit Aunli (1981/82), Elena Välbe (1996/97), Larissa Lazutina
(1997/98) and Therese Johaug (2018/19) as the women that have won a
record two classic style distance events on Norwegian snow in a single
season.
