Johannes Høsflot Klæbo
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo can win his third successive world title in the
men’s sprint, and his second in the sprint classic. Klæbo (2) already is the
only man to have won multiple sprint world titles.
Klæbo has won six world titles in cross-country skiing and he can join four
men to have won at least seven world titles in all events (men’s and mixed):
Petter Northug (13), Bjørn Dæhlie (9), Sixten Jernberg (8) and Gunde Svan
(7).
Klæbo has won the men’s sprint event at each of the last four world
championships and Olympic Winter Games (2018-2022).
Richard Jouve
Richard Jouve won two sprint World Cup events this season, both in the
classic style.
Jouve hopes to win his first individual world championships medal. He took
bronze with France in the 4x10km relay in 2019.
France has yet to finish on the podium of a men’s sprint event at the world
championships. At the Olympic Winter Games France’s Roddy Darragon
took silver in 2006.
Other contenders
Norway won gold, silver and bronze in the men’s sprint at the world
championships in 2021: Klæbo (1st), Erik Valnes (2nd), Håvard Solås (3rd).
It was the first time a country won all three medals in a male’s sprint at the
world championships.
Pål Golberg could win his first individual medal at the world
championships. He won the world title in the men’s 4x10km relay in 2021.
Even Northug hopes to win his first medal at the world championships. His
brother Petter Northug leads all men in having won a record 13 world titles.
Federico Pellegrino won the world title in the men’s sprint in 2017
(freestyle) and he claimed silver in 2019 (freestyle).
Pellegrino has won five world championships medals in all events, only
Silvio Fauner (7) and Maurilio De Zolt (6) have won more among Italian
men.
Calle Halfvarsson could win Sweden’s sixth world championships medal
in the men’s sprint, but only the first since 2011 (gold for Marcus Hellner,
bronze for Emil Jönsson).
Norway (18), Russia (5), Sweden (5), Italy (3) and Canada (2) are the
countries to have won a medal in the men’s sprint at the world
championships.
Kvinner
Jonna Sundling
Jonna Sundling won the women’s sprint event at the world championships
in Oberstdorf in 2021. She can become the third woman to win the sprint
event multiple times at world championships, after Marit Bjørgen (4) and
Maiken Caspersen Falla (2).
Sundling won a women’s World Cup sprint event in the freestyle in Planica,
on 21 December 2019.
Kristine Stavås Skistad
Kristine Stavås Skistad won the most recent women’s World Cup sprint
event in the classic style, in Les Rousses on 28 January. It was her first
ever podium finish in a World Cup event.
Stavås Skistad is looking to become the fourth Norwegian woman to
become world champion in the individual sprint, after Marit Bjørgen (4),
Maiken Caspersen Falla (2) and Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen (1).
Other contenders
The last nine women’s World Cup sprint events in the classic style were
won by nine different skiers.
Maja Dahlqvist is the leader of this season’s women’s World Cup sprint
events standings. She has not won a World Cup sprint event this season (4
second place finishes and 1 third).
Emma Ribom won the first women’s World Cup sprint classic style event
of this season (in Ruka) and finished second in the last women’s World
Cup sprint classic style event (in Les Rousses).
Linn Svahn can become the third Swedish skier to win the women’s sprint
at the world championships, after Emelie Öhrstig in 2005 and Jonna
Sundling in 2021.
In January 2023, Svahn made her comeback in a World Cup event in
Livigno. It was her first participation in the World Cup since February 2021.
Svahn reached the final in all of her three appearances in individual World
Cup sprint events this season (5th, 4th, 5th).
Twin sisters Lotta Udnes Weng and Tiril Udnes Weng finished first and
second in the sprint classic style in the Tour de Ski in Val di Fiemme this
season. It was the first time both sisters ended on the same podium of an
individual World Cup event.
Nadine Fähndrich is hoping to become the second Swiss female crosscountry skier to collect an individual world championship medal, after Evi
Kratzer took bronze in the 5km classic style in 1987.
