Jessica Diggins
Jessica Diggins won the 20km pursuit freestyle in the Tour de Ski in
Toblach on 1 January.
Diggins has yet to win an individual World Cup event in classic style. All
seven of her podium finishes in classic style events were third places,
including a third place in the 10km classic style on 31 December 2023.
Diggins is the most recent winner of an individual World Cup distance event
in Davos – the 20km freestyle on 18 December 2022. She had finished
second in the sprint here the day before.
Prior to the sprint event in Davos on 3 January, Diggins has won eight
events in the Tour de Ski. Five women have won at least 10 Tour de Ski
events.
Kerttu Niskanen
Kerttu Niskanen won the 10km classic style event in Toblach on 31
December. At the age of 35, she became the oldest winner of a women’s
event in the Tour de Ski.
It was Niskanen’s sixth win in an individual World Cup event. She is closing
in on her brother Iivo Niskanen who has won eight individual World Cups.
All six of Niskanen’s individual World Cup wins were in 10km classic style
events. He best result in an event beyond 10km was a second place in the
20km classic style in Les Rousses on 29 January 2023, behind Ebba
Andersson.
Other contenders
Victoria Carl was second in this season’s Tour de Ski standings prior to
the Davos events. She could become the third German woman to win an
individual World Cup Tour de Ski event, after Claudia Nystad in December
2008 (2.8km freestyle) and Katharina Hennig on 7 January 2023 (15km
classic).
Linn Svahn (6) is level with Stina Nilsson (6) in most individual World Cup
wins in the classic style among Swedish women. Svahn won two distance
events in the classic style, including the 10km in Val Müstair in the Tour de
Ski on 2 January 2021.
Among Swedish women, only Frida Karlsson (4) and Ebba Andersson (3)
have won more individual World Cup events in classic style than Svahn (2).
Andersson has withdrawn from this Tour de Ski.
No Swedish woman has ever won an individual distance World Cup event
in Davos. Marie Helene Östlund is the only Swedish woman to claim a
podium finish here in a classic style event: third in the 5km in December
1990.
Prior to the sprint in Davos, Emma Ribom had yet to win an individual
World Cup event in the Tour de Ski (sprint or distance).
Heidi Weng has claimed a record 37 podium finishes in Tour de Ski events
(Therese Johaug 36).
Weng has claimed four podium finishes in Davos (two 2nd places and two
3rd places). Only Kristina Šmigun-Vähi (4) claimed as many podium
finishes here without winning as Weng.
