Forhåndsomtale
Menn
● This is the eighth time Trondheim is hosting a World Cup stage. The first time was in the
1989/90 season, the last time in 2023/24. Last winter, Trondheim hosted the Nordic World
Ski Championships for the second time, having also hosted it in 1997.
● Norway started the season winning all three Men’s events of the first World Cup stage in
Ruka, Finland – just like in the 2020/21, 2022/23 and 2023/24 season openers.
● Martin Loewstroem Nyenget (NOR) won the 10km Interval Start Classic race in Ruka last
weekend, with Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo (NOR) in second place and Mika Vermeulen (AUT)
third. It was the sixth World Cup win for Nyenget, who leads the Distance standings after the
first weekend of World Cup action. Vermeulen reached the fourth podium of his career, but
is still seeking his first World Cup win.
● Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo (NOR) won the Sprint Classic in Ruka, with Erik Valnes (NOR) in
second place and Ansgar Evensen (NOR) third, as Norway produced their first clean sweep
of the season. It was the 99th World Cup win for Klaebo, who comes to Trondheim as the
leader of the Sprint standings. Evensen got the fourth podium of his career, but is still seeking
his first World Cup win.
● Harald Oestberg Amundsen (NOR) won the 20km Mass Start Free in Ruka, with Einar
Hedegart (NOR) in second place and Edvin Anger (SWE) third. It was the 12th World Cup win
for Amundsen, and a second consecutive triumph in Ruka’s 20km Mass Start Free. His 24-
year-old teammate Hedegart claimed the second podium of his career after his second place
in the 10km Interval Start Free in Oslo (NOR) last season.
● Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo (NOR) is seeking his 100th individual World Cup victory in
Trondheim as the Sprint Classic triumph in Ruka was the 99th World Cup win of his career.
● Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo (NOR) holds the record for most individual World Cup wins in a
single season since the 2022/23 season, when he topped the podium 19 times. Klaebo’s 16
World Cup victories in the 2023/24 season is the second highest number of World Cup wins
in a single season.
● Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo (NOR) also holds the record for most individual podiums in a
single season from 2022/23, when he made it to the podium in 23 individual World Cup
podiums.
● Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo (NOR) has won the overall World Cup title five times between
2017/18 and 2024/25. If he wins the 2025/26 overall Crystal Globe, he will equal his
countryman Bjoern Daehlie (NOR), who currently holds the record with the six overall titles
that he won between 1991/92 and 1998/99. Klaebo is currently tied with Gunde Svan (SWE)
on five titles. No other active Men’s Cross-Country skier has more than two Crystal Globes.
● Norway dominated the World Championships in Trondheim last season, winning all six
Men’s events, Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo (NOR) leading the way with a clean sweep of six
gold medals out of six events.
Kvinner
● This is the eighth time Trondheim is hosting a World Cup stage. The first time was in the
1989/90 season, the last time in 2023/24. Last winter, Trondheim hosted the Nordic World
Ski Championships for the second time, having also hosted it in 1997.
● Sweden started the season winning two out of three Women’s events of the first World
Cup stage in Ruka (FIN), just like they did in the first weekends of the 2020/21 and 2024/25
season. In the 2022/23 and 2023/24 season openers, Sweden won all three Women’s races.
● Frida Karlsson (SWE) won the 10km Interval Start Classic race in Ruka last weekend, with
Heidi Weng (NOR) in second place and Moa Ilar (SWE) third. Karlsson also triumphed in the
event in Ruka last season, claiming one of her two World Cup wins of 2024/25. She has 14
individual World Cup victories to her name, four of them coming in Ruka as she also won a
race in Ruka in 2021/22 and one in 2022/23.
● Kristine Stavaas Skistad (NOR) won the Sprint Classic race in Ruka last weekend, with
Jonna Sundling (SWE) second and Maja Dahlqvist (SWE) third. It was Skistad’s 12th career
World Cup win, all of them coming in Sprints.
● Jonna Sundling (SWE) won the 20km Mass Start Free race in Ruka last weekend, with Jessie
Diggins (USA) in second place and Heidi Weng (NOR) third. It was the first World Cup Mass
Start win in the career for Sundling.
● Jessie Diggins (USA) is the only active athlete with more than 20 individual World Cup
victories. She has won 27.
● Jessie Diggins (USA) has won three overall World Cup titles, including two in the past two
seasons. If she wins a third consecutive overall title this season, it would be her fourth in
total, placing her just behind Elena Vaelbe Trubitsina (RUS), who won five titles between
1988/89 and 1996/97.
● Jessie Diggins (USA) has also won the last two Distance titles. If she wins the Distance title
again this season, it would be her fourth Distance title, tying her with Justyna Kowalczyk
(POL), just behind the all-time best Therese Johaug (NOR), who has won it five times.
● Jasmi Joensuu (FIN) won the Sprint World Cup title in 2024/25; her first World Cup title.
She did not win an individual race across the season and was on the podium in just one
Sprint race – a second place in Toblach (ITA).
● Anne Kyllonen (FIN) is competing in the 19th World Cup season of her career, having
debuted in 2007/08. In 369 World Cup race starts, she has made it to 17 podiums, including
two wins – both in Team Sprint.
● Sweden dominated the Women’s side of last season’s World Championships in
Trondheim, winning all six Women’s events, with Jonna Sundling (SWE) and Ebba
Andersson (SWE) claiming three gold medals each.
