Om New York Marathon

New York City Marathon er verdens største maratonløp med over 36 000 løpere i 2005, som årlig blir arrangert i den amerikanske byen New York City. Sammen med Boston Marathon og Chicago Marathon er løpet regnet som det mest prestisjefylte langdistanseløpet i USA. På grunn av løpets popularitet er de knapt 37 000 plassene et fast antall, og deltakere blir plukket ut gjennom et stort lotterisystem. Profesjonelle løpere som er medlem av NYRRC eller nominert av en annen offisiell løpeklubb, er garantert plass.

Den mestvinnende utøveren i løpets historie, er norske Grete Waitz, som gikk til topps ni ganger.

I 2008 seiret brasilianske Marílson Gomes dos Santos i herreklassen, og fikk dermed sin andre seier på tre år. Vinneren av kvinneklassen, britiske Paula Radcliffe, vant for tredje gang.

I 2012 ble New York City Marathon avlyst etter press fra befolkningen etter stormen Sandy.

I 2020 ble New York City Marathon avlyst for andre gang. Denne gangen var det koronaviruspandemien fra 2019 som var årsaken.
