Norwegian skiers have won the last 22 individual men’s distance World
Cup events, since Finland’s Iivo Niskanen in Lahti on 27 February 2022
(15km classic style).
Norwegian skiers have won all four World Cup men’s distance events held
in Östersund.
Pål Golberg won the 10km freestyle in Gällivare on 2 December and took
the lead in the 2023/24 distance World Cup, one point ahead of Harald
Østberg Amundsen.
Golberg’s win in Gällivare marked his second individual World Cup victory
in a freestyle event, after the 10km in Toblach on 4 February 2023.
Amundsen’s two best individual World Cup results came in 10km freestyle
events: a first place in Les Rousses on 27 January 2023 and a second
place last week in Gällivare.
Simen Hegstad Krüger could claim his 10th individual World Cup win. All
previous nine came in freestyle distance events.
Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget has recorded eight individual podium finishes
in World Cup events (including two wins), but only two of those came in the
freestyle.
Other contenders
Andrew Musgrave is currently joint-third in this season’s distance World
Cup standings. Musgrave (one second place, two third places) is chasing
his first individual World Cup win.
Michal Novák finished second in the 20km freestyle mass start in Ruka on
26 November. He can become the first Czech cross-country-skier to claim
a World Cup win since Lukáš Bauer won the 10km classic style in Ruka on
30 November 2013.
The 17-year old Alvar Myhlback made his World Cup debut in the 10km
freestyle event in Gällivare with a 37th place.
The youngest male cross-country skier on the podium of an individual
World Cup event was Vladimir Smirnov (2nd, 20y-016d) in the 15km classic
style in Murmansk on 23 March 1984.
The only male teenager to finish in the top five in an individual World Cup
event was Uwe Bellmann (19y-100d) in the 15km classic style in January
1982 (5th).
