Overall World Cup
Before the start of this event, the skiers can still collect a maximum of 230
points for the overall crystal globe: 100 points for the 10km classic and 130
points for the 20km mass start (including bonus points).
Harald Østberg Amundsen can win the overall World Cup for the first
time. His best result in the overall World Cup standings was an eighth place
in 2021/22.
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo can win the overall World Cup for the fifth time,
after 2017/18, 2018/19, 2021/22 and 2022/23. Only Bjørn Dæhlie (6) and
Gunde Svan (5) have won the men’s overall crystal globe at least five
times.
Norway has won the men’s overall World Cup a record 17 times, at least
eight more than their nearest competitor Sweden (9).
Distance crystal globe
With only two World Cup distance events to go this season, Harald Østberg
Amundsen (1,430) holds a 210-point lead over Pål Golberg (1,220) in the
distance standings. Theoretically, Golberg could still claim the distance
crystal globe by winning both events and racking up enough bonus points.
Amundsen can win his first crystal globe. His best result was an eighth
place in the overall standings in 2021/22. His best result in the distance
standings was a ninth place in 2021/22.
Golberg won the distance crystal globe in last season’s World Cup. Only
one Norwegian man won the distance crystal globe multiple times: Martin
Johnsrud Sundby (in 2013/14, 2015/16 and 2016/17).
Norwegian men have won the distance crystal globe a record six times
(including the ‘Long Distance World Cup’ between 1996/97 and
1999/2000).
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won each of the last two individual World Cup
distance events, the 20km classic in Lahti on 2 March and the 50km classic
in Oslo on 10 March. He can become the first skier this season to win three
successive individual men’s World Cup distance events.
Klæbo has won 18 individual distance World Cup events in the classic
style, joint-second most alongside Vladimir Smirnov (18) and Gunde Svan
(18). Bjørn Dæhlie (22) tops that list.
Klæbo won four of the five World Cup 10km classic events he participated
in. The only exception was a 14th place in Ruka on 25 November 2023.
Only Bjørn Dæhlie (6) won as many World Cup 10km classic style events
as Klæbo (4).
Klæbo won the most recent World Cup distance event in Falun, the 10k
classic style on 17 March 2023. It marks his only individual World Cup
distance victory at the resort.
Since March 2022, Norway won 18 of the 19 individual distance classic
style events in the men’s World Cup, with Perttu Hyvärinen’s triumph in the
10km in Toblach (Tour de Ski) on New Year’s Eve as the exception.
Other contenders
World Cup distance leader Harald Østberg Amundsen has only one
individual World Cup win in the classic style: the 20km pursuit in Davos
(Tour de Ski) on 4 January.
Erik Valnes (2) is the only man other than Klæbo (3) to record multiple
victories in World Cup distance classic style events this season. He won
the 15km in Val di Fiemme (Tour de Ski) on 6 January and the 20km in
Oberhof on 20 January (his only two World Cup distance wins).
Valnes is the only man to claim multiple podium finishes in World Cup
10km classic style events this season: third in Ruka in November and
second in Toblach in December.
Perttu Hyvärinen is the last non-Norwegian man to win an individual World
Cup classic distance event: the 10km in Toblach on New Year’s Eve. He
failed to reach the top five in each of his other 14 distance events this
World Cup season.
Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget won the first 10km classic style event in the
2023/24 men’s World Cup, in Ruka on 25 November. He reached the
podium in two World Cup distance events since (both in the 20km classic):
second in Oberhof on 20 January, third in Lahti on 2 March.
Pål Golberg recorded five of his seven individual World Cup distance
event wins in the classic style. Golberg triumphed in last month’s 20km
mass start in the classic style in Canmore on 11 February.
