Statistikk og historikk
Norway
Emil Iversen is the reigning world champion in the 50km classic from
Oberstdorf in 2021. He beat Alexander Bolshunov to the line by 0.7
seconds.
Norwegian men have won seven of the last nine 50km events (classic or
freestyle) at the world championships. Petter Northug (3) is the only one
during that period who won multiple gold medals.
Northug is the last cross-country skier to win back-to-back world
championships in 50km events (2009-2011).
Iversen (1) could join seven men who have won multiple world titles in the
men’s 50km classic style or freestyle events. Sixten Jernberg won a record
four world titles.
Pål Golberg is leading the distance World Cup standings this season but
the longest race has been over a 20km distance. Golberg came fifth in his
last 50km World Cup event (50km pursuit in Engadin in March 2021).
Simen Hegstad Krüger is the bronze medallist from the 50km freestyle at
the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, the highest Norwegian finish in that event
in Beijing.
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo leads the overall World Cup rankings this
season. He has yet to finish on the podium in a 50km event at a major
competition (world championships, Olympic Winter Games, World Cup).
Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget is the last cross-country skier to win a men’s
50km classic race in a major event. He triumphed in the World Cup event in
Oslo in March 2022.
Hans Christer Holund (won 50km freestyle in 2019) can become the third
cross-country skier to win a world title in the men’s 50km in both the classic
and the freestyle, after Petter Northug and Gunde Svan.
Other contenders
Iivo Niskanen won Finland’s only individual gold medal at the world
championships from 2013-2021, a gold medal on home snow in the 15km
classic style in 2017. He won gold in the 50km classic style at the Winter
Games in 2018.
Niskanen is hoping to hand Finland its first world title in a men’s 50km
event since Mika Myllylä in 1999 (50km classic).
Only Sweden (19) and Norway (14) have won world titles in the men’s
50km event than Finland (11).
Jens Burman finished fifth in the 50km classic style event at the world
championships in 2021. He could become the first Swede to reach the
podium in a 50km event at the world championships since Johan Olsson
(bronze in 2015).
Andrew Musgrave missed the podium by one place in the 50km freestyle
event in 2017 (fourth). Going into these championships Great Britain has
never won a medal at a world championships.
Scott Patterson is hoping to become the second United States’ man to win
world championships medals, after Bill Koch (2). Patterson finished in the
top 10 in 50km events in the world championships in 2021 (10th) and
Olympic Winter Games in 2022 (8th).
