About
The Berenloop, the most beautiful running event in the Netherlands.
Over the years, the Berenloop has grown into one of the largest athletics events in the Northern Netherlands. This is not only because of the beautiful route, which leads through the varied nature of Terschelling, but also because of the fantastic atmosphere that prevails on the island.
In 2026, the 29th edition of the Berenloop will take place on Sunday November 1.
The first edition took place on October 26, 1997, as a sportive end of the theme year ‘400 years of Willem Barentsz’. Willem Barentsz, famous seafarer and native of Terschelling, tried to sail to Asia via the north in 1596. It turned out to be a horror journey with many hardships and a forced hibernation between the ice floes on Nova Zembla. Thanks to the polar bears, the crew had enough food to survive the winter. And that is how the marathon got its name: the Berenloop (bear run).
