Champions Chess Tour 2023

The Champions Chess Tour 2023 (CCT) is a massive chess circuit combining the best features of previous Champions Chess Tour editions with the Chess.com Global Championship. The tour comprises six events spanning the entire year and culminating in live in-person Finals.

With the very best players in the world and a $2,000,000 prize fund, the CCT is Chess.com’s most important event to date. The tour starts on February 3 at 8 a.m. PT/17:00 CET with the 2023 Airthings Masters.

Format

The Champions Chess Tour consists of six events, culminating in a Playoff and the Finals. The 2023 ChessKid Cup is the third event of the tour, and the winner of this event automatically qualifies for the Playoffs.

The event begins with a qualifying phase that is open to all non-grandmaster titled players. The successful qualifiers will then compete with grandmasters in the Play-in stage, with the top players moving on to a Knockout stage that has three divisions. Each division has its own prize fund, and players will also earn Tour Points based on their placement within each division. By the end of the tour’s sixth event, the players with the highest Tour Points will earn a spot in the CCT Playoff.

Qualifiers

• Open to all titled players except grandmasters, who automatically enter the Play-Ins.
• Consists of a nine-round Swiss format.
• Time control is 10+2.
• Top three players from each event will be eligible to participate in the upcoming Play-In.
• Takes place every Monday at 8 a.m. PT from February 13 to August 21, except on weeks with a Play-In or Knockout.

Play-In

• The Play-in stage of the CCT is open to grandmasters only.
• It consists of a nine-round Swiss tournament and a «Match Play» stage.
• The time control is 10+2.
• The highest-ranked players from the Swiss tournament qualify for the Match Play stage.
• The top five players from the Swiss tournament select their opponents from players placed between sixth and 10th.
• The remaining Match Play pairings are based on the final Swiss tournament rankings.
• Each Match Play consists of two games.
• Match Play ties are broken by a bidding armageddon game. The players bid on the amount of time they want to start with, and the winner chooses their color. Black has draw odds. If the bid is tied, players bid again. There is no increment.
• Following Match Play, players advance to the Knockout stage and are placed in one of three divisions based on their results.

Knockout

The Knockout stage includes 56 players competing across three different divisions determined by their Match Play results.

• Division I: eight players.
  • Three invited players: Nakamura, Caruana, and Abdusattorov.
  • The five winners of matches between the top-10 players from the Play-in Swiss.
• Division II: 16 players.
  • The five players who lose the matches between the top 10 players from the Play-in Swiss.
  • The 11 players who win the matches between players ranked 11th to 32nd in the Play-in Swiss.
• Division III: 32 players.
  • The 11 players who lose their matches between those placed 11th to 32nd in the Play-in Swiss.
  • The 21 players who win their matches between those placed 33rd to 74th in the Play-in Swiss.

The Knockout stage follows this format:

• Each features a double-elimination knockout bracket.
• The time control is 15+3.
• Divisions I and II have four-game matches in the Winners Bracket and two-game matches in the Losers Bracket.
• Division III has two-game matches in both the Winners and Losers Brackets, and a four-game match in the Grand Finals.
• If there is a Grand Finals reset (when a player coming out of the Losers Bracket wins the first set), the second set features a two-game match.
• In case of a tie, a bidding armageddon game with a 15-minute base time will decide the winner.
