As the jewel in the crown of events organised by European Athletics, the biennial European Athletics Championships are the showcase of the very best that the continental branch of the sport has to offer.
At the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships from 15-21 August, part of the wider multisport European Championships from 11-21 August, no fewer than 11 championship records were set across the seven days of competition in the city’s hallowed Olympic Stadium, the venue for the1972 Olympic Games.
Highlights included Armand Duplantis defending his pole vault title and improving his championship record to 6.06m, Femke Bol winning a historic treble in the 400m, 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay, Jakob Ingebrigtsen defending his 1500m and 5000m titles and 19-year-old Mykolas Alekna from Lithuania winning the discus with a championship record of 69.78m.
Hosts Germany topped the medal table with seven gold medals ahead of Great Britain & NI with six. Germany had an especially memorable hour on the second evening session with Niklas Kaul and Gina Luckenkemper winning gold medals in the decathlon and 100m respectively.
The 2024 European Athletics Championships will take place in Rome from 7-12 June some 50 years after the Italian capital last staged the championships.
