Day 1: Kipyegon’s Dominance in the 5000m
On Friday, Kipyegon faced fierce competition from Beatrice Chebet and 2019 world silver medallist Margaret Chelimo in the 5000m. During the final lap, Kipyegon, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, began to pull away, finishing first with a time of 14:46.28. Chebet secured the other automatic spot with a time of 14:52.55, while Chelimo finished third in 14:59.39.
Day 2: Another Victory for Kipyegon in the 1500m
On Saturday, Kipyegon delivered an even more remarkable performance with a gun-to-tape victory in the 1500m, clocking in at 3:53.99. Nelly Jepchirchir, who trailed Kipyegon for the first three laps, finished second with a time of 3:58.46, ahead of Susan Ejore, who completed the race in 4:00.22.
Wanyonyi’s Historic 800m Run
In the men’s 800m final, 19-year-old Wanyonyi led from the start and won the race with an impressive time of 1:41.70, making him the third-fastest in history, following David Rudisha and Wilson Kipketer. A day earlier, Wanyonyi’s Olympic dreams were nearly dashed after a disqualification in the semi-final, but he successfully appealed and advanced to the final. Wyclife Kinyamal finished second in 1:42.50, while Koitatoi Kidali took third with a time of 1:42.66.
High-Altitude Challenges
These remarkable results are even more noteworthy given the high-altitude conditions of the Kenyan Trials, which make it particularly challenging for middle and long-distance runners to achieve world-class times.
Men’s 100m:
Ferdinand Omanyala won the 100m at the Kenyan Olympic trials with an impressive time of 9.79, setting the world’s best mark of the year, just over a month before the Paris Games. Until now, the best time of the year belonged to Jamaican Oblique Seville, who ran a 9.82 on June 2 in Kingston. Watch Video Here.
