Norway
Norway has won a record five world titles in men’s team sprint events,
including three in freestyle. No other country has won more than one world
title in the team sprint freestyle (Italy and Russia one each).
Norway won the team sprint at the last four world championships and
Olympic Winter Games combined. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo was part of
all four teams. Erik Valnes was his partner at the world championships in
2021 (freestyle) and Winter Games in 2022 (classic).
Klæbo can become the first man to win three world titles in team sprint
events. The only man on more than two world championships medals in the
team sprint are Nikita Kriukov (G2-S1-B1) and Federico Pellegrino (G0-S1-
B2).
Other contenders
France’s Renaud Jay and Richard Jouve won the only World Cup team
sprint event this season, in Livigno on 22 January. They won ahead of Italy
(2nd) and Switzerland (3rd).
France has yet to win its first world championships medal in a men’s team
sprint event.
Italy won the team sprint world title in 2007 (freestyle).
Federico Pellegrino (3) could equal Nikita Kriukov (4) on a record four
world championships medals in team sprint event.
Pellegrino has won 17 individual sprint events in the World Cup, including
16 in freestyle and one in classic. In the team sprint event at the world
championships he has won more medals in the classic style (2) than in the
freestyle (1).
Sweden has won one world championships medal in men’s team sprints
event, silver in 2013 (freestyle). The country won a joint-record six medals
(G3-S3-B0) in the women’s team sprint (Norway G3-S0-B3).
Finland (G0-S1-B2) claimed three world championships medals in the
men’s team sprint, including silver in 2021. Only Russia (G2-S3-B1) and
Italy (G1-S1-B2) have won gold, silver and bronze in the men’s team sprint.
Kvinner
Sweden
Sweden is looking to become the first nation to win four team sprint events
at world championships. They won it in 2011 and in 2019 (both classic
style), before Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist won the previous one in
2021 (freestyle).
Sweden finished first and second in the only women’s World Cup team
sprint race of this season. A team consisting of Linn Svahn and Dahlqvist
won the freestyle event in Livigno on 22 January ahead of Emma Ribom
and Sundling in second place.
Since the beginning of 2018 Sweden won nine of the 13 team sprint events
in Olympic Winter Games, world championships and World Cup combined,
including each of the last three freestyle events. Dahlqvist was part of all
nine of these wins.
Dahlqvist (2) can become the first woman to win three world titles in the
team sprint event (classic and freestyle). Maiken Caspersen Falla (4) and
Ida Ingemarsdotter (3) are the only women to have won at least three
medals in team sprint events at world championships.
Other contenders
Julia Kern and Rosie Brennan finished third for United States in the
women’s World Cup freestyle team sprint in Livigno earlier this season.
United States (Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall) won the women’s
freestyle team sprint event at the world championships in Val di Fiemme in
2013.
Diggins also claimed bronze in the team sprint at the world championships
in 2017 (classic style). Maiken Caspersen Falla (4) and Ida Ingemarsdotter
(3) are the only women to have won at least three medals in team sprint
events at world championships.
Norway has won three team sprint events at the world championships,
including two in the freestyle event.
Norway is looking for its first women’s team sprint world title since 2017
(classic style) since 2015, when Heidi Weng and Invild Flugstad Østberg
won it.
Germany won the gold medal in the women’s team sprint classic style at
the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. Its best team sprint result at world
championships is a silver medal in the freestyle team sprint event in
Sapporo in 2007.
