Frida Karlsson
This will be the first pursuit event of the 2023/24 World Cup. Last season,
Frida Karlsson won two out of three pursuits and finished third once.
Karsson won the 20km freestyle pursuit in the Tour de Ski in Oberstdorf on
4 January 2023.
Karlsson can become the first woman to win back-to-back World Cup
pursuit events since Therese Johaug (run of 4) in January-November 2020.
Among Swedish cross-country skiers, only Charlotte Kalla (4), Karlsson (2)
and Stina Nilsson (1) have won women’s pursuit events in the World Cup.
Other contenders
Jessica Diggins finished second in the first individual freestyle distance
event this World Cup season, but won the most recent two.
The last woman to record a run of at least three successive freestyle
distance wins in the World Cup was Therese Johaug, who won 13 in a row
between January 2019 and November 2020.
Diggins (5) is joint-sixth in individual distance event wins in the Tour de Ski,
alongside Heidi Weng (5). Virpi Kuitunen (7) sits in fifth. Note: Excluding
the 10km classic style in Toblach on 31 December.
Heidi Weng (4) can become the fifth woman to reach five pursuit event
triumphs in the World Cup, after Johaug (22), Marit Bjørgen (6), Justyna
Kowalczyk (6) and Ingvild Flugstad Østberg (5).
Weng (37) has recorded the most podium finishes in the Tour de Ski
among women, including six podium finishes in the overall Tour. She is one
away from claiming the overall record as she is now tied with Petter
Northug (37).
Two of Weng’s five stage victories in the Tour de Ski came in freestyle
pursuit events: the 9km pursuits in Val di Fiemme in January 2017 and
January 2018.
Ebba Andersson has finished on the podium of a World Cup pursuit event
five times, but has yet to win one. Only Nina Gavrylyuk (6) has recorded as
many podium finishes in World Cup pursuit events without ever claiming a
victory.
Andersson has claimed one win in the Tour de Ski, in the 10km freestyle
mass start in Val di Fiemme on 10 January 2021 (hill climb). He
finished second in the 20km freestyle mass start in Ruka on 26 November,
less than a second behind Jan Thomas Jenssen.
Novák can become the second male skier from Czech Republic to win an
individual World Cup event, alongside Lukáš Bauer (18 wins between 2003
and 2013). Bauer’s last individual World Cup victory was a win in the 10km
classic event in Ruka on 30 November 2013.
Mika Vermeulen finished only three seconds from the podium in the World
Cup 20km freestyle event in Ruka on 26 November (4th). Vermeulen can
become the first Austrian man to claim a podium finish in an individual
World Cup event in all disciplines since Christian Hoffmann finished third in
Lahti in March 2009 (15km freestyle).
