Harald Østberg Amundsen
Harald Østberg Amundsen won the 20km pursuit freestyle in Toblach on 1
January. He has yet to win an individual World Cup event in classic style.
The last Norwegian other than Johannes Høsflot Klæbo to win an individual
Tour de Ski distance event in classic style was Emil Iversen in Oberstdorf
on 2 January 2019.
The last two Tour de Ski seasons in which multiple pursuit events were
held, one man won both pursuits: Alexander Bolshunov in 2020/21 and
Klæbo in 2022/23.
Perttu Hyvärinen
Perttu Hyvärinen won the 10km classic style event in Toblach on 31
December. He can become the first Finnish man to win multiple Tour de
Ski events. Matti Heikkinen (January 2011) and Iivo Niskanen (December
2021) each won one.
Niskanen (Ruka in November 2021, Lenzerheide in Tour de Ski in
December 2021) is the last Finnish man to have won back-to-back
individual World Cup events in classic style.
Finland has won 24 individual World Cup event in classic style, level with
Kazakhstan in fourth place, behind Norway (194), Sweden (55) and Russia
(38).
Other contenders
Erik Valnes has won two individual World Cup events, both in sprint
classic style. Of his 16 podium finishes, 12 were in classic style events
(including 2nd in the 10km in Toblach on 31 December).
Jan Thomas Jenssen hopes to win his first Tour de Ski event. Earlier this
season he claimed his first individual World Cup win in the 20km freestyle
in Ruka (26 November).
Norway’s Didrik Tønseth is the last winner of a men’s individual World Cup
in Davos in classic style: the 15km on 13 December 2014. He failed to
finish in the 20km pursuit freestyle in Toblach on 1 January and has
abandoned the Tour.
Sweden has not won a men’s individual World Cup event since Oskar
Svensson won the sprint freestyle in Ulricehamn on 6 February 2021.
Earlier that year he became the last Swedish men to win a Tour de Ski
stage, in the sprint classic style on 9 January 2021.
Only Norway (25) has won more men’s individual World Cup events in
Davos than Sweden (7). The last Swede to win here was Jonas Olsson in
the 15km freestyle on 17 February 2013.
