Forhåndsomtale
- Defending champion Femke Bol arrives in Tokyo undefeated over her pet event
- New challenger Savannah Sutherland to make a bid for the podium
- Dalilah Muhammad determined to finish her career on a high
Can anyone deny Femke Bol a second consecutive world title in the 400m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25?
In the absence of the Olympic champion and world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who has opted for the 400m flat this time, it seems unlikely if the 25-year-old Dutch athlete maintains her standard.
Bol has so far put together a perfect season over the quarter-sticks, winning eight successive races in Rabat, Hengelo, Stockholm, Monaco, London, Budapest, Silesia and Zurich. She has barely been troubled in compiling that magnificent eight.
But she will not take the challenge of winning her second world title lightly, following last year’s Paris Olympics where she pushed into her red zone trying to match pace with the incomparable McLaughlin-Levrone and paid for it in the final straight as a second US athlete, Anna Cockrell, passed her to claim the silver medal.
Bol confirmed she would be wary of complacency in Tokyo, saying after her win in the Wanda Diamond League Final: “Everyone thinks that things will happen if I just click my fingers, but it is not at all the case.”
She has respect both for the technical complexity of the event and for her competitors, particularly the Rio Olympic and Doha world champion Dalilah Muhammad, 35, who intends to retire this year and has been close to career-best form this season, with a best run of 52.58.
“It will be Dalilah’s last run ever and I am sure she will put on a great race, and the others are also pretty strong, so I am just going in with my strongest race from start to finish, and I will see what it brings me,” Bol said. “Of course, I hope for gold. You can never know, and if I can put up a good race it is all I can do.”
Bol famously changed her stride pattern between the hurdles in the lead-up to Paris, in an attempt to get on terms with McLaughlin-Levrone, but it backfired on that occasion. However, with another season to bed in her new race rhythm – 14 strides between hurdles one to seven, and 15 strides between hurdles eight to 10 – she has looked virtually bulletproof this year.
Her season’s best of 51.91 makes her the only athlete to have bettered 52 seconds this year, although others in the field are capable of that speed.
Muhammad’s best of 51.58 puts her in the conversation, as does Cockrell’s 51.81, although she has yet to show that form so far this year.
The breakthrough performer of the year has been 22-year-old Canadian Savannah Sutherland, the NCAA champion who sits second on the entry list for times run this season with the national record of 52.46 she ran in Eugene.
A decorated University of Michigan graduate, Sutherland has lowered her Canadian record by 0.8 this year, building on her appearance in the Paris Olympic final last year where she finished seventh.
She was not at her best in her only Diamond League outing this year, in Silesia last month, finishing sixth, and will need to recapture her top form to bid for her first senior world medal.
The third contender on the US team, Jasmine Jones (53.18), and Slovakia’s rising star Emma Zapletalova (53.18) are others who could challenge for the podium.
